Prince Edward Island is home to many beautiful sights and activities that most are privy to. But every once in a while you find out about something new and unexpected. Today that pleasant surprise is ‘Buffalo Land’!

Buffalo Land is a provincial park located just south of Montague at Milltown Cross which holds Prince Edward Island’s entire population of buffalo! In 1973 the province of Alberta donated the buffalo to Prince Edward Island, creating a 100 acre preserve for them to roam freely, whilst still under protective laws.

In 2014, Buddhists on the island rallied to take over the provincial park and care for the buffaloes in an attempt to save them from the officials of P.E.I. It was purchased for a dollar and given into the hands of the community to oversee their preservation. Now the monks rely on tourism to help with upkeep and the care of these precious animals.

At the park, they offer curated information on the species of buffalo and the history behind them. As well as an elevated deck view of the park, to keep the buffalo undisturbed, but also offer the visitor an amazing view over the landscape. It’s a perfect outing for the whole family, educational and perfect for nature and animal lovers alike.
